At Recovery College, our educational-based approach focuses on helping people recognize and develop their own resourcefulness and awareness in order to support themselves or their loved one’s recovery journey. All of our courses are developed and delivered in partnership with our peer supporters who are experts by experience: they have their own story of a mental health or substance use concern, or are supporting a loved one.

Everyone is welcome to attend our free courses and drop-in classes. No previous experience is required. There are currently 11 courses to choose from.

Our Recovery College courses are interactive and create positive learning experiences, emphasizing connection, hope and belonging. An emphasis is placed on an individual’s talents and strengths. Our courses inspire optimism, encourage students to consider future opportunities, and more people towards personal empowerment. Recovery is a journey, not a destination.

If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact us at 780-743-1053 or wellness@woodbuffalo.cmha.ab.ca. We look forward to meeting you soon.

Still have questions about our courses?

Our courses offer more structured learning experiences than a typical group program. They’re designed with input from qualified and experienced educators based on contemporary learning theory. Each course has clear learning outcomes and activities to explore and build knowledge.

Nothing! All courses are free, but you must register before attending.

Our courses are friendly, informative, engaging and enjoyable to help students on their recovery journey. Two trainers co-facilitate each course – one an expert by education, working in their field of expertise; the other an expert by experience, those who have personal experience who will share their experience as part of the course.

None. All of our courses are open to everyone at all levels and at all stages of recovery. All we require is an open mind and a willingness to participate.

The courses are held at the 8530 Manning Avenue Unit #111 Fort McMurray, AB T9H 5G2.

Anyone aged 16+ affected by mental health or addiction who want to explore the recovery journey and their own wellness. Those who are supporting a family or friend, as well as people working in the mental health field are welcome to attend. No referral is needed.

Creating programs that are designed to empower

The Canadian Mental Health Association is a nationwide charitable organization which formed in Canada in 1918, Alberta in 1955, and then in Fort McMurray in 1984. CMHA facilitates access to resources people require to maintain and improve mental health and community integration, build resilience and support recovery from mental illness and substance use.

CMHA Wood Buffalo builds awareness and provides education and support for individuals and families living with mental health or substance use concern, or a loss by suicide. We provide community-based support programs, including Mental Health First Aid, ASIST, Anger Management, and Peer Support to mention a few.

We work closely with other community organizations to assist in bridging gaps in the mental health care system and facilitate access to important services and resources.
